WWA Releases 2012 Wakeboard World Series Boat Schedule!

From Lake Alfred, FL – (February 22, 2012) In its 23rd year as a global leader in the sport of wakeboarding, the World Wakeboard Association (WWA) is now releasing the 2012 WWA Wakeboard World Series (WBWS) schedule. 2012 will see long-term partners of the WWA play host to the highest caliber wakeboarders in the World. Brazil, Canada, and USA will be turned up-side-down and all-around by World Champion wakeboarders Dean Smith, Phil Soven, and Aaron Rathy. Many more top caliber riders will make it out to each stop, but there can only be one 2012 WBWS overall champion.

In 2011, the 4-time World Series champion, Phil Soven of the USA, was knocked off of his top spot by Australian phenomenon, Harley Clifford.

“I’m really excited for the (2012 WWA Wakeboard) World Series this year!” states 2011 Overall Champion, Harley Clifford, “I’m going to try and defend my title, plus all the venues we go to are perfect for wakeboarding and are always such a good time!”

Only time will tell if Clifford will be able to defend his 2011 overall championship; which will not be an easy task if Aaron Rathy, Dean Smith and Phil Soven have anything to do with it. One thing is for sure, the 2012 WBWS will be better than ever!

Ragga Wake Director, Bruno Dib talks about the WBWS-Brazil stop. “For this year’s WWA Wakeboard World Series stop in Brazil, we’re planning a few changes to make the event even better; we’ll be separating the WBWS event from the Brazilian Amateur stop, so this time only the Pro riders will compete in the event. The idea is to have more time for the Pro Men to do their show, and have more time also for other activities such as Roxy’s Stand up Paddle clinics, some pocket shows in Quiksilver’s lounge, DC’s BMX and Skateboard demos, and of course the well know sunset parties and bikini contest. The official website for the event will be online soon at www.raggawake.com with all the info about the event.”

“This year the WBWS-Brazil should be even more fun than last year’s.” states President of Associação Brasileira de Wakeboard (ABW), Mario Manzoli. “The wakeboard competition will be all about the Pro Men riders, but there will be also a lot of different stuff to do such as shows, demos, and parties; much like other real successful events like Wakestock Canada. I can’t wait!”

“Wakestock has truly proven that it reigns as one of the best wakeboard contests in the world.” WWA President Shannon Starling states, “The WWA is proud to have a strong bond with the largest wakeboard festival in the world.”

“Wakestock returns to Millenium Park in Collingwood, ON, Canada on August 10-12, 2012. As one Canada’s largest summer action sports festivals and the worlds largest wakeboard and wakeskate events, we’re proud to celebrate our 14th year.” editor of SBC Wakeboard Magazine and Wakestock Technical Director, Adam Levitt ” We’re also very excited to announce Wakestock is now an official qualifier for the Masters Waterski and Wakeboard Tournament, with the winner of the Pro Men’s Wakeboard and Pro Men’s Wakeskate receiving invites to the 2013 event.”

Final Wrap-Up from the WWA Wake Park World Championships: Dominik Guehrs Stuns the World!

December 21, 2011

From Abu Dhabi, UAE — The 21-year-old phenomenon from Germany, Dominik Guehrs, has accomplished the impossible. He has won the 2011 WWA Wake Park World Championships and the 2011 WWA Wake Park World Series overall championship; something that only American, Tom Fooshee, has previously achieved. Guehrs’ incredible triumph could not have happened in a more Cinderella fashion. Guehrs and fellow German, Freddy von Osten were tied just 15 points behind Fooshee coming into the 2011 WWA Wake Park World Championships hosted by Al Forsan International Sports Resort, December 7-10 in Abu Dhabi, U.A.E.

It was an intense battle on the right-foot-forward cable (counter-clockwise) at Al Forsan, but riders were able to adapt to the cable and squeeze in some serious maneuvers. The new two pass format enabled riders to concentrate on quality of tricks, not quantity. Fooshee needed to finish in at least 2nd place to defend the WWA World Series title; however, in compelling form, Fooshee had two unfortunate falls on a switch Pete Rose 540 followed by an S-Mobe 540, which kept him off of the podium. The battle was left to Guehrs, von Osten, and Thai sensation, Daniel Grant; anyone could have taken the victory.

In an interview just days before claiming his championships, Guehrs stated “I have to win Worlds to win both (Wake Park Worlds & Wake Park World Series). (Winning Worlds) is what I will focus on.

“We have a changing of the guard.” States WWA President, Shannon Starling, “Each rider gave it 100%, and to see the young German win is something spectacular.”

Tom Fooshee, Reed Hansen and Mark Webb Dominate at the 2011 Telekom Extreme Playgrounds!

The 2011 Telekom Extreme Playgrounds came to a close on Sunday August, 28th in Hamburg, Germany. It was an action packed weekend of top level riding in Wakeboard, Wakeskate and BMX. With live performances from punk rock bands Yellowcard, NOFX and Rise Against, and some epic pre event and after parties, this was one of the best TEP to date.

Tom Fooshee of the USA was unstoppable this weekend!  It was the fourth time that the Wake Park rider finished on top of the podium at the Telekom Extreme Playgrounds. His competitors Rocco von Straten of the Netherlands and Lior Sofer of Israel were left behind after his first run. Only the German rider, Dominik Gührs could keep up with him, but had to tip his hat to Fooshee after a second run of 82.33 points by the American. Dominik Gührs, Rocco van Straten and Lior Sofer finished 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectfully.

“Best wakeskater of all time” – that´s the title for the USA’s Reed Hansen! Nobody can beat this guy at the moment. It was his first appearance at the Telekom Playgrounds – actually, it was his first contest on European soil. Moritz Thiele of Germany was close behind, but had to be satisfied with 2nd place in the end as Hansen laid down several tech flip tricks. Last year’s winner Tarik Ghoniem from Germany finished up in 3rd, with Jan Kissman also of Germany in 4th.

The BMX final was nothing but spectacular! UK top rider Mark Webb showed once again that there´s no one better at the mini ramp right now. He earned 95.00 points with his first run, leaving everybody else behind and taking the title home for the third time in a row. The surprise of the weekend was Daniel Tünte of Germany. This youngster was the winner of the Telekom Local Support Miniramp Challenge which brought him in the company of the pros. He showed absolutely no fear for the big names and was rewarded with second place, leaving even Italian pro Alessandro Barbero behind in 3rd.

The WWA Wake Park World Championships Hosted by Al Forsan in Abu Dhabi December 7-10 will be the final stop of the WWA Wake Park World Series. As the Rankings stand now, Tom Fooshee is back on top, but don’t rule out German riders Dominik Gührs and Fredy von Osten nipping at Fooshee’s heels. Click Here for the full WWA Wake Park World Series Rankings.

Top Notch Riders And Live Acts Are Lined Up For The Telekom Extreme Playgrounds!

PRESS RELEASE – August 23nd 2011 from Telekom Extreme Playgrounds

Pinneberg is ready to rumble!

On August 28th, Hamburg is the place to be for the 5th edition of the Telekom Extreme Playgrounds

Waterski- and Wakeboard location turns into live music arena: After a sold-out tour Rise Against celebrate their 2011 open air final together with NOFX and Yellowcard

Action sports on a world class level: riders fight for $ 45.000 prize money at the official stop of the WWA Wake Park World Series and the international BMX Miniramp contest

The entire event is broadcasted live on www.telekom-playgrounds.de/live

Finally! In a few days doors will open for the Telekom Playgrounds. On August 28th the almost sold out Waterski Arena Pinneberg will turn into an international Mecca for action sports. This year’s headliner Rise Aginst will be supported by NOFX and Yellowcard. At the official tour-stop of the WWA Wake Park World Series top wakeboarders like Fredy von Osten and Tom Foshee have to face heavy competition from around the world and the international BMX miniramp contest features a class of its own.

One event, three action sports categories and three first-class live bands: That’s the Telekom Extreme Playgrounds. The international wakeboard and wakeskate cable contest on August 28th in Pinneberg is also an official tour stop of the WWA Wake Park World Series 2011. Riders from around the world have to go through a qualification on Saturday. Only the 14 best wakeboarders will start on Sunday. The BMX miniramp contest shows an extreme high level with 14 international pro riders. On top of that Rise Against, NOFX and Yellowcard will rock the stage by the lake.

Please welcome at the Telekom Playgrounds – Rise Against: Their current album “Endgame” was released in March and made it straight to #1 in the German album charts and was followed by a sold-out tour across Germany. Now, they are returning as one of the anniversary highlights of the Telekom Playgrounds. Their fellow countrymen of NOFX can look back at more than 6 Million albums sold and are one of the most successful independent bands of the world. Yellowcard is a member of the international Punk-Rock circus since 1997 with a Top 5 US Album position on their tab.

Odds-on favorite in Wakeboard cable are the German titleholder and current WWA #1 Fredy von Osten, three-times Telekom Playgrounds Winner Tom Foshee (USA) and dreaded shooting star Daniel Grant (THA). Next to them, we have Steffen Vollert, who won this year ́s German championship for the 4th time, junior world vice champion Rocco van Straten (NL) and Hungarian champion 2011 Szebasztian Szolath.

The wake skaters show a heavy competition as well. Starting with US superstar Reed Hansen, who has to fight junior world champion and titleholder 2010 Tarik Ghoniem as well as 13 year old Daniel Grant (THA),who ́s the only rider starting in both categories. Of course, current German and Europe champion 2010 Jan Kissmann won ́t want to miss this opportunity to show us what he ́s got.

They most heaviest competition can be expected at the BMX miniramp with UK ́s finest, Ben Wallace, Mark Webb and Harry Main. Their style and trick repertoire define the European top and every one of them has at least won one title at the Telekom Playgrounds. Next to them we expect German miniramp champion Tobias Wicke, the currently best dutch rider Daniel Wedemeijer and the Spanish pro Daniel Penafiel.

The event is almost sold out and only a few tickets are left. Most likely there will be no box office tickets available, but everybody has the chance to watch the entire event live via webcast. Starting at 12:00 a.m. Freecaster.tv will stream live at www.telekom-playgrounds.de/live and all results can be followed in realtime on our website as well: www.telekom-playgrounds.de/results

Abu Dhabi’s Al Forsan International Sports Resort to Host WWA Wake Park World Championships for Three-Year Run!

Lake Alfred, FL — The World Wakeboard Association (WWA), the world’s premier provider of amateur and professional wakeboard events, judges and sanctioning, has signed a three-year agreement with the newest, most innovative cable facility ever built, located at the Al Forsan International Sports Resort in Abu Dhabi.

“After a visit to Al Forsan, it was immediately evident that this was the place to hold the world’s largest cable event and its best riders,” said WWA president Shannon Starling. “Quite simply, it is the most amazing cable park and sports facility ever created. You have to see this place — and ride it — to believe it.”

The 15 million-square-foot sportsman’s paradise features two freshwater cable lakes (with clockwise and counterclockwise full cable systems, a two-tower unit and first-of-its-kind filtration system), and is located in the new heart of Abu Dhabi, in Khalifa City, adjacent to the famous Yas Island — home of Ferrari World and the Abu Dhabi F1 racetrack. As a membership and public based club, Al Forsan has created a combination of premier, sport-specific venues for equestrian, shooting, go-karting, paintball and wakeboarding designed to host elite global events.

The WWA Wake Park World Championships presented by Al Forsan International Sports Resort is the pinnacle of the WWA Wake Park World Series, the longest-running professional and amateur cable tour in the world. Al Forsan will host the WWA Wake Park World Championships December 7-10, 2011. Registration will be open to all riders beginning September 1.

“The goal of Al Forsan is to be the world’s finest sports resort by hosting the premier events and athletes,” said Atef Nagib, the Managing Director of Al Forsan International Sports Resort. “Our partnership with the WWA will position Al Forsan as the destination for the world’s top cable wakeboard athletes, and we simply cannot wait to show the world’s best amateur and professional riders this facility.”

2011 Protest Cable Call Final Results and Recap!

The 2011 Protest Cable Call & 2nd stop of the WWA Wake Park World Series came to a close last weekend after a two day wake-battle in 5 different divisions. The 2nd edition of the Cable Call, held at the Down Under Cableway & Wavesurfer in Nieuwegein, Holland drew more than 100 wakeboarders and wakeskaters from 14 different countries. Riders came all the way from Asia, Australia, the United States, Israel and from all across Europe, attempting to take titles in their respected divisions and their share of the $27,000 cash prize.

New for this year was the Pro Wakeskate and Pro Obstacles Only divisions, alongside the Open Men Amateur, Pro Men and Pro Women categories. The contest kicked off on Saturday with a bit of rain and some less than ideal weather, however, that didn’t stop the impressive field of riders from throwing down their very best out on the water. As the competition heated up throughout the weekend, so did the level of riding and the crowd was treated to a really great show.

All eyes were on the Pro Men division as multi-time defending WWA Wake Park World Series overall champion, Tom Fooshee, fell early on his finals run, thus leaving the door open. The young German, Fredy von Osten, knew exactly what was to be done and took  full advantage of the course. Osten laid down a flawless final pass that included a Frontside 900, Raley 540, Back Mobe 540, Front Mobe, and 630-to-Frontboard transfer. Osten ended up taking the victory by 10 points over his fellow German riding partner, Dominik Gührs, who finished 2nd. Daniel Grant of Thailand and Tom Fooshee of United States, finished 3rd and 4th respectfully.

The Pro Obstacles Only contest is always a crowd favorite as 4 riders hit the water at once in a 7 minute jam format. This year was loaded with action, as well as some unexpected upsets and results. German wonder boy, Fredy von Osten once again dominated the field, taking the win, a load of cash and claiming a double victory at the 2011 Protest Cable Call. He was followed in 2nd place by another young German superstar and rail slayer Felix Georgii. This snowboarder turned wakeboarder showed the world once again how diverse and skilled a rider he is by also securing a top 8 finish out of almost 40 competitors in the Pro Men’s division. In 3rd place was Protest team rider James Young of the UK  returning to the competition scene after almost an entire season off from a shoulder injury. James certainly has not lost his touch and it’s great to see him back out on the water ripping.

The Pro Wakeskate division did not disappoint as Andy Kolb laid down a clean run full of tech tricks and rail hits, earning him a first place finish. Leo Labadens of France finished up in 2nd and Elias Erkan from Germany took 3rd. In the Pro Women’s division, Dutch rider Denise de Haan showed her overall consistency throwing down a solid run and earning the 1st place title. She was followed by British riders Tor Young and Kirsten Mitchell who rounded out the podium in 2nd and 3rd. In the Open Men category, young Devi Sentrop took the lead over fellow Dutch riders Tommy Swaan and Jan Kerkhoven.

Huge thanks to the whole team at PROTEST for an awesome event and party. See you next year!

The 2011 Protest Cable Call was brought to you by PROTEST, Down Under Cableway & Wavesurfer, Teva, Jobe, NuSport, Q-Music, EXventure and the World Wakeboard Association. Form more info, news, videos and photos from the event, please click HERE!
